Compest is the meta-project of Martin Steinebach, combining influences of his other projects Consientia Peccati, Monoid and StillStand. Starting with its first release in 2004, noise, ambient, ritual and ethnic sounds are merged into long instrumentals, hard to label with a specific style. Zittern is the fifth full-length release of this project.

Zittern is the German word for shivering and at the same time a synonym for vibrating. The full title “Vom Zittern der Saiten” could be translated into “About the vibrating of the strings” and depicts the concept of this Compest album, the usage of models of acoustic bass sounds. All tracks feature a plucked, slow, dark spine. Above this spine, synthetic ambiences, manipulated field recordings and a bit of noise coexist with melodies, both played by synthesizers and virtual instruments. Percussion sounds have not been used in this work, but in some cases the instruments show percussive characteristics. Still bass strings always remain the driving force within the tracks. Sound colors range from ethnic to piano pieces, but the core remains experimental electronics.

Zittern should be a drifting, yet solid experience to the listener.
